Depending on whom you believe, credit cards have been with us since either the late forties or early fifties, introducing a life of convenience the previous generations would have stopped in the street and gawked at. No longer did we have to haul around hefty sacks of cash in order to fund our pursuit of leisure. A simple transaction with a small card was all that was required.

Online Purchase Security System

Of course, back then, doubtful telephone calls had to be made and identification signatures suspiciously evaluated. Compared to today, it was the equivalent of being frisked and frog-marched to a holding cell for a prolonged bout of cross-examination. Now, with the Online Purchase Security System from Hammacher Schlemmer, those days are long gone.

With the advent of the internet the credit card came into it’s own. No longer would hours be spent listening to repetitive “your call is important to us” messages on the telephone in order to purchase from a catalogue (a previous version of internet shopping printed on something called “paper” and distributed via the mail to households around the world). Nowadays simply typing your credit card number into a little box on a website is usually all that is required.

Peace Of Mind With One Swipe

The problem is this method is ripe for fraud, especially as the more we do it, the more blasé we become about throwing our numbers around like candy at a kids’ parade. Even “secure” travel sites such as Expedia.com has suffered $4.1 million losses from credit card fraud, according to CNN.

Criminal Fraudsters can put hidden software on your computer to detect and steal your credit card number and you‘d never know it until your bill showed up.

The Online Purchase Security System attaches to your computer with a retractable USB cable and reads your credit card with a swipe, then encrypts the number before it even reaches your computer, then inserts the encrypted number into the credit card field on the website you are visiting. The software never stores your number on your computer, taking any fraudsters’ surreptitious malware or spyware out of the equation. As an added bonus, you’ll never have to type in your number again.

The Online Purchase Security System is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7, and Internet Explorer 6 and higher. Support is forthcoming for Firefox.

Dimension: 3”/7.5cm long, 2”/5cm Wide and 1½”/3.75cm tall. Weight: 6oz/180g. Price: $89.95. Shipping: Signature gift wrapping available for $6.95.

How many of us have grown up watching the Star Wars saga? No doubt a great many of us have entertained thoughts of what it would be like to have our own personal droid. Now you can! R2-D2, the plucky little robot that was full of courage and attitude, is now available for purchase.

Voice Activated R2-D2

This is not your average movie replica collectible though. This faithful R2-D2 replica is voice activated! Imagine giving the little droid commands and then watching him carry them out. There are more than forty voice activated commands you can give R2-D2.

The realm of voice activation has advanced considerably. This is readily apparent with R2. The first toys that utilized such technology could only follow simple one word commands. They could only store an extremely limited number of these as well.

Voice Activated Features

Today, voice activated electronics can handle a great many commands even complex ones. R2-D2 can follow such commands. For example, if you want him to move forward you just have to tell him to “move forward five units.” This gives him a directional command as well as a distance command.

Do you remember how R2 could sometimes fall into an ill mood? All you have to do is to tell him “R2, behave yourself” and he will get over it. How’s that for following commands? This voice activated R2-D2 can do so much more as well.

With R2-D2’s infrared sensor you can play a game of tag. He will use the sensor to seek out anyone in the room. Another benefit of his infrared sensor includes R2-D2’s ability to stand sentry in a room. You could know when your siblings (or your spouse) sneaks into your room unannounced. Imagine their surprise when R2 sounds the alarm!

R2-D2’s wheels are not the only part of this precocious droid that moves. Just like in the movies, his dome can rotate. This allows R2 to scan the room. It also gives you the distinct feeling that this voice activated droid is actually listening to you.

R2-D2’s sounds are just as authentic as the rest of the little robot. From his happy whistles and beeps to his sad little “wheeooo” sounds R2 will leave you thinking that he can actually feel emotions. Perhaps his best quality, however, is his ability to dance.

The droid’s voice activated dance command will cause R2-D2 to begin dancing while playing the most famous of the Star Wars music, the Cantina Theme. Another trait of this lovable little droid is its ability to answer yes or no questions. He can also mimic sound effects and actual lines from the movies.

While this voice activated R2-D2 is not nearly as tall as his famous movie counterpart (15” vs. roughly 3 ft) he is just as energetic and loveable. One thing to keep in mind is that this R2 does require four AA batteries and four D batteries. If you are looking for the perfect gift for the Star Wars fan in your life this voice activated R2-D2 is just the thing.
